The 13th Annual Hall Of Fame Golf Tournament, Dinner, and Auction to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert is going to be bigger and better than ever this year. Scheduled for January 30, 2013 this year’s event will break from tradition in two important ways. This will be the first year it will be held at the beautiful Indian Wells Country Club. In addition, instead of honoring a sports figure which is customary, the tournament will honor Dr. Edwin Stempler.
Dr. Stempler was a founding member of the charity who worked tirelessly for over a decade developing and facilitating the annual golf tournament as well as raising funds with other pursuits for the organization. His dedication was well known among his peers and the example he set has become the bar for excellence. The big winners have been the boys and girls of the Coachella Valley. Dr. Stempler knew that one-on-one mentoring is the best way to give a young person the tools they need to succeed. His passing in 2011 was a great loss for everyone.
The Indian Wells Country Club boasts a 36 hole championship golf course that was originally built in 1956. Architect and founder Eddie Susalla was joined by such luminaries as Desi Arnaz, Paul Prom, Earl Murphy, Bill Worthing, Linn Johnson and John Curci in establishing the original course. With yardage of 6,478 and panoramic views of the picturesque Santa Rosa Mountains, the Classic Course quite simply one of the most beautiful golf courses in the Coachella Valley. The Cove Course was built several years later and boasts unique holes to challenge even the best golfers.
Although golfing is great exercise and a lot of fun, you will find golfers to be among the most generous and hard-working people anywhere. Multiple tournaments to benefit charity are held every year in the Coachella Valley and every year millions of dollars are raised for the benefit of others from every walk of life. It is a testament to the sports and work ethic of golf that so much good has come from such an amazing sport.
Over the years Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert has made it their mission to better the lives of children in need. The one-on-one mentoring program has proved successful beyond anyone’s wildest dreams again and again. These are children who have grown up to succeed and pay it forward. That is what Big Brothers Big Sisters is all about. I hope to see everyone come out January 30 to support this stellar golf tournament and outstanding charity.
