Excitement builds across the Valley as the highly anticipated “Horse Show in the Sun” (HITS) gears up for its third consecutive year. The AIG Thermal Million Dollar Grand Prix set for January 22-March 17, 2013 just keeps getting bigger and better and this year proves to be the best yet. The place to be is Desert Horse Park, a 230 acre state-of-the-art facility located in nearby Thermal. As one of the largest equestrian venues in the United States it draws thousands to the Coachella Valley giving the local economy a substantial boost.
Beginning in 2010 the Horse Show in the Sun (HITS) has been widely lauded as a world-class horse show. One of a series that also occurs in Ocala, Florida and Arizona this particular show is known for its exhibition of the three richest Hunter/Jumper classes in the United States. On Tuesday through Sunday from 8 AM to 4 PM during the six-week run spectators will be able to enjoy champion riders, sleek thoroughbreds, and 16 Grand Prix qualifying and prize events culminating in the big finale on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day.
HITS started with its first West Coast winter circuit in 1991. In 1992 they produced the Indio desert circuit where their success and popularity became well known. Finally in 2007 the HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal was debuted to rave reviews. With more than $20 million in upgrades over the former Indio location, Desert Horse Park has stabling facilities for over 3400 horses and boasts 14 competition rings. The park offers over 250 various equestrian classes each week. Specially selected divisions exhibit jumping for both novice and experienced riders.
The Horse Show in the Sun attracts the brightest and best champion riders and competitors from around the world. Admission to the six-week event is free with a five dollar entry fee on Sundays only. Conveniently located a short drive from the popular desert casinos and gourmet quality restaurants, there is always plenty to do before and after the show.
